What is the Graduate Management Admission Test - GMAT?

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a standardized exam administered by GMAC, used by MBA and other graduate management programs — mainly in the US and globally — to assess a candidate's readiness for advanced business study. Since the November 2023 GMAT Focus Edition redesign, it tests quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and data insights in a leaner, business-focused two-hour format.

What the Graduate Management Admission Test - GMAT Evaluates

Solve Quantitative Problems

Apply arithmetic and algebra to business-relevant problem-solving, without geometry.

Interpret Multi-Source Data

Read tables, graphics and mixed data sets to draw sound conclusions.

Reason Critically Through Text

Evaluate arguments and comprehend passages under Verbal Reasoning.

Manage Time Strategically

Choose your own section order and use limited answer-review edits wisely.

Purpose & Philosophy

"Can this candidate reason through data, arguments and numbers the way management study and business decisions demand?"

Business-FocusedData-DrivenQuestion-Adaptive

Administered By

Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC)
Good to know: Since November 2023, the GMAT Focus Edition is the only active version of the GMAT — the Analytical Writing Assessment and Sentence Correction have both been removed entirely. Old prep material built around the classic GMAT is out of date.

GMAT or GRE — Which Should You Take?

Many MBA programs now accept either

MBA & Business Programs →
GMAT

The exam business schools have historically preferred and often still ask for by name

Accepted Alternative →
GRE (at many B-Schools)

A growing number of MBA and management programs now accept GRE scores instead

GMAT vs. GRE

Feature GMAT GRE
Purpose Built specifically for MBA & management admissions A broader graduate-admissions test, also accepted by many B-schools
Key Focus Quant, Verbal and Data Insights — business-relevant reasoning Verbal, Quant and Analytical Writing — broader academic reasoning
Format & Frequency Year-round, test center or online — you choose the section order Year-round, test center or at-home — section order is largely fixed
Check your target schools' specific policy — acceptance of GRE-in-place-of-GMAT varies by programme. Sukhada's coaching below is built around the GMAT, which remains the more business-specific, widely recognized choice for MBA admissions.

Each section is 45 minutes; there is no essay in the Focus Edition
Up to 3 answers per section can be reviewed and changed

How the Graduate Management Admission Test - GMAT Is Scored

Three equally-weighted scores: Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights are each scored on a 60–90 scale (1-point increments) and combine into a 205–805 total score (10-point increments). There is no separate essay score — the AWA was removed in the Focus Edition.

Total Score Bands (205 – 805)

705+
Highly Competitive

Elite territory — competitive for HBS, Wharton, Stanford and other top-5 programs

665 - 695
Competitive

Strong for top-15 MBA programs

605 - 655
Average

Solid for a wide range of MBA programs

545 - 595
Below Average

May limit options at higher-ranked programs

Below 545
Low

Likely to fall short of most competitive program expectations

Why Does 645 "Feel Like" a 700?GMAC has confirmed that a Focus Edition score of 645 sits at roughly the same percentile (~87th-88th) as a 700 did on the classic GMAT. The two scales cannot be compared directly — always think in percentiles, not raw numbers, when comparing an old score to a new one.
Score Validity: 5 years from test date

Typical Competitive Combined Score by Country

United States flag United States 645 - 705
Canada flag Canada 605 - 665
United Kingdom flag United Kingdom 645 - 705
Germany flag Germany 605 - 665
Singapore flag Singapore 645 - 705
Australia flag Australia 605 - 665
GMAC has not published official country-specific score data for the Focus Edition — these are general, rule-of-thumb ranges. Exact requirements vary widely by business school and programme tier; always verify with your target institution.

Retakes

You can retake the GMAT once every 16 days, up to 5 times within any rolling 12-month period. The GMAT Focus Edition removed the old classic-GMAT lifetime cap of 8 attempts — there is no lifetime limit under the current policy, only the rolling 12-month rule. If you score a perfect 805, a 5-year wait applies before you can retest.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Studying old GMAT material with Sentence Correction and geometry
Use Focus Edition-specific material — both were removed from the current exam
Deciding your section order on test day
Test different orders in mocks beforehand and lock in your preference in advance
Ignoring Data Insights as a "soft" section
Treat it as equally weighted — it counts exactly as much as Quant or Verbal
Overusing the answer-review feature
Save your 3 edits per section for genuine second-guesses, not routine double-checking
Practicing Quant with a calculator
Train without one — only the on-screen whiteboard is available in this section
Practicing only with unofficial question banks
Use GMAC's own Official GMAT Focus practice exams for the most accurate score prediction
