What is the American College Testing - ACT?

The ACT is a standardized exam administered by ACT, Inc., used by four-year colleges and universities — mainly in the US — to assess a candidate's readiness for undergraduate study. Unlike more abstract reasoning tests, the ACT is curriculum-based: it tests English, Math, Reading and Science skills close to what students typically cover in high school, with an optional Writing section for colleges that ask for it.

What the American College Testing - ACT Evaluates

Apply English Mechanics

Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and rhetorical skills in context.

Solve Curriculum-Based Math

Algebra, geometry, trigonometry and data analysis from a typical high-school syllabus.

Read & Interpret Passages

Comprehend and analyze prose from multiple subject areas under time pressure.

Reason Through Scientific Data

Interpret graphs, experiments and research summaries — not memorized science facts.

Purpose & Philosophy

"Can this student handle the reading, writing, math and science-reasoning demands of a typical undergraduate curriculum?"

Curriculum-BasedStraightforward ScoringFixed-Order Sections

Administered By

ACT, Inc. (USA)
Good to know: Almost all applicants only need the standard ACT (No Writing). The optional Writing section is only required by a small number of colleges — always check your target school's requirements first.

ACT or SAT — Which Should You Take?

Most US colleges accept either

Most Applicants →
ACT (No Writing)

English, Math, Reading and Science — the standard four-section test

Optional Add-On →
ACT with Writing

Adds a 40-minute essay for colleges that specifically request it

ACT vs. SAT

Feature ACT SAT
Purpose Curriculum-based — tests what's typically taught in high school Reasoning-based — tests verbal and math aptitude more broadly
Key Focus English, Math, Reading, Science (+ optional Writing) Reading & Writing, Math — no dedicated Science section
Format & Frequency Paper-based or ACT Online, fixed national test dates Fully digital, fixed national test dates
Check your target schools' specific policy — both are accepted equally at most US colleges, so the choice often comes down to which format suits the student better. Sukhada's coaching below is built around the ACT (No Writing), which covers the vast majority of applicants.

How the American College Testing - ACT Is Scored

Four section scores, one composite: English, Math, Reading and Science are each scored on a 1–36 scale, and the Composite is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest whole number. The optional Writing essay is scored separately (2–12) and does not affect the Composite.

Composite Score Bands (1 – 36)

34 - 36
Highly Competitive

Elite territory — competitive for the most selective US universities

29 - 33
Competitive

Strong for top-tier, highly selective programs

24 - 28
Average

Solid for a wide range of four-year colleges

18 - 23
Below Average

May limit options at higher-ranked programs

Below 18
Low

Likely to fall short of most four-year college expectations

How Is the Composite Calculated?Your Composite is simply the average of your four section scores (English, Math, Reading, Science), each rounded individually before averaging. A 27 on English, 25 on Math, 29 on Reading and 26 on Science averages to a Composite of 27.
Typical Acceptance Window: 5 years from test date

Typical Competitive Composite Score by Country

United States flag United States 24 - 30
Canada flag Canada 22 - 28
United Kingdom flag United Kingdom 24 - 30
Germany flag Germany 22 - 27
Singapore flag Singapore 26 - 32
Australia flag Australia 22 - 27
ACT, Inc. has not published official country-specific score data — these are general, rule-of-thumb ranges. Exact requirements vary widely by college and programme tier; always verify with your target institution.

Retakes

You can retake the ACT on any future national test date it's offered — there's no mandatory waiting period between attempts. Most colleges consider your highest Composite score (or "superscore" your best section scores across attempts), but policies vary, so always check with your target institution.
