The UK Student visa is points-based and document-driven. If your paperwork is complete and consistent with your CAS, the decision is usually straightforward. Most refusals we see come from small, avoidable errors.
Rules and fees change, so always confirm the latest requirements on the official GOV.UK Student visa page before you apply.
Core documents
- Valid passport with at least one blank page.
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number from your university.
- Proof of funds covering tuition (minus any amount already paid) and living costs.
- Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic.
- Academic documents listed on your CAS.
- Proof of English language ability, if required by your CAS.
Documents that apply to some students
- ATAS certificate for certain science and engineering postgraduate courses.
- Parental consent letter and birth certificate if you are under 18 or using parents' funds.
- Education loan sanction letter if funds come from a loan.
- Translations of any document not in English.
The two mistakes behind most refusals
First, funds that dip below the required amount at any point during the 28-day period, or a bank statement that is too old on the day you apply. Second, documents that do not match what your university listed on the CAS, such as a different qualification or a missing mark sheet.
Application order
- Receive your CAS and check every detail on it.
- Complete the online application and pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
- Book and attend your biometrics appointment at a visa application centre.
- Upload or submit supporting documents.
- Wait for the decision and collect your passport.
