  1. Start with the subject ranking

  3. Factors rankings never measure

An overall ranking tells you how a whole university performs. You will not study at a whole university. You will study in one department, with a handful of professors, on one set of modules.

Start with the subject ranking

A university ranked around 40 overall can be top 15 for data science, while one ranked 12 overall might be average in that subject. QS, THE and national tables all publish subject-level lists.

Read the modules, not the brochure

  • Are the core modules aligned with the job you want?
  • Is there a placement year, internship or industry project?
  • How much choice do you get in electives?
  • Who teaches it, and are they active in the field?

Factors rankings never measure

Cost of living, weather, Indian community, part-time job availability and post-study work options all shape your two years abroad. A slightly lower-ranked university in a city with strong hiring for your field is often the better bet.
