About University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield is a public research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Its legal status comes from a Royal Charter granted in 1905, but it traces its roots to the Sheffield Medical School (1828), Firth College (1879) and the Sheffield Technical School (1884), which merged in 1897 as University College, Sheffield. It is a member of the Russell Group of 24 research-intensive UK universities. Teaching and research are organised in five faculties (Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Health, Science and Social Sciences) and 26 academic departments. In 2024-25 it had 27,885 students and 8,786 staff, including 632 professors. QS records about 11,400 international students, roughly 40% of the student body. In REF 2021, 92% of its submitted research was rated in the top two categories, world-leading or internationally excellent. The university counts six Nobel laureates and five Queen's Anniversary Prizes. It is known for engineering, architecture, computer science, medicine and the social sciences. The campus runs along the western edge of the city centre, with the Endcliffe and Ranmoor student village a short walk away.

Undergraduate degrees start in September and are applied for through UCAS. All taught master's programmes start in September only, with no January or February intake; the university sets no single deadline but says demand often exceeds places, so international applicants should apply as early as possible.
