About University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth is a public university in Portsmouth, on the south coast of England. It traces its roots to the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art, opened in 1870, became Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1969 and was inaugurated as a university on 7 July 1992. Teaching is organised in five faculties: Business and Law; Creative and Cultural Industries; Humanities and Social Sciences; Science and Health; and Technology. The main Guildhall campus sits in the city centre, with halls, the Ravelin Sports Centre and teaching buildings close together, and the university also runs a London campus in Walthamstow that opened in 2024. It has about 30,000 students, and QS reports that around 32% of its students are international. In REF 2021, 77% of its research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent, and it was third for research power among post-1992 universities. It holds a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Known strengths include cosmology and astrophysics, cyber security, forensics, pharmacy and sport science. Navitas runs the International College Portsmouth (ICP) pathway college on campus, and 93% of graduates are in work or further study 15 months after graduating.
