About University of Plymouth
The University of Plymouth is a public university in Plymouth, Devon, in south-west England. It began as the Plymouth School of Navigation in 1862, later became Plymouth Polytechnic and gained university status in 1992. Its main campus is at Drake Circus in the city centre, close to the waterfront and Plymouth Hoe. Teaching is organised in three faculties: Arts, Humanities and Business; Health; and Science and Engineering. It includes the Peninsula Medical School and Peninsula Dental School, which grew from a partnership with the University of Exeter begun in 2000. The university has more than 19,000 students and 2,500 staff, including about 2,000 international students from over 100 countries, plus around 7,500 students on Plymouth degrees at partner institutions. In REF 2021 over three-quarters of its research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent. It is known for marine science and engineering, and Professor Richard Thompson of Plymouth coined the term microplastics. It holds TEF Gold in all three categories (2023), three Queen's Anniversary Prizes, and was named Community University of the Year 2027 by the Daily Mail University Guide.
