About University of Glasgow
The University of Glasgow is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. It was founded in 1451 by a papal bull of Pope Nicholas V, which makes it Scotland's second-oldest university and the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world. In 1870 it moved from the High Street to Gilmorehill in the West End, where the Gilbert Scott Building and the Hunterian, Scotland's first public museum, still stand. Teaching and research are organised in four colleges: Arts and Humanities; Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences; Science and Engineering; and Social Sciences. Other sites include the Garscube Estate (Vet School and sports facilities), the Dental School, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus and the Crichton Campus in Dumfries. In 2024/25 it had 38,710 students (24,300 undergraduates and 14,410 postgraduates), and about 36% of students came from outside the UK. It is a member of the Russell Group and a founding member of Universitas 21. Research income was GBP 241.1 million in 2024-25. Alumni include Adam Smith, James Watt, Lord Kelvin and Joseph Lister.
