"Your future in life sciences"
At a Glance
The Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) is one of the leading universities of life sciences and technology in the Baltic States. Its roots go back to 1863, when an agricultural department opened at the Riga Polytechnical Institute, and it later became a separate university in Jelgava in the late 1930s. Formerly known as the Latvia University of Agriculture, it took its current name in 2018. Today, LBTU's main building is the historic Jelgava Palace, and the city itself is often called Latvia's student capital. The university brings together five faculties — Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture and Food Technology, Forest and Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Information Technologies, and Economics and Social Development. Known for its hands-on teaching, close links with industry and research in areas such as the bioeconomy, sustainable resource management and rural development, LBTU prepares specialists to tackle modern challenges in farming, food production and environmental protection. Ranked in the 1201–1400 band of the QS World University Rankings 2026 and a member of the Challenge EU alliance, it offers around 27 English-taught programmes with intakes in both September and February, and counts two former Prime Ministers of Latvia among its alumni.
