  1. A structure that works
  2. Show, do not tell
  3. Common mistakes

"Since childhood I have been fascinated by technology." If your SOP opens like this, so do hundreds of others on the same desk. A strong SOP is not about better adjectives. It is about specific evidence.

A structure that works

  • A specific moment or problem that got you interested in the field.
  • What you have done about it: projects, work, research, results.
  • The gap: what you still need to learn.
  • Why this course and university fill that gap.
  • Where you plan to go after graduating.

Show, do not tell

Instead of "I am a strong leader", write about the time you coordinated a five-person team to deliver a college project two weeks early. Admissions officers remember stories and numbers, not labels.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating your CV in paragraph form.
  • Sending the same SOP to every university with only the name changed.
  • Going far over the word limit.
  • Using AI-generated or template text that sounds like everyone else.
