Almost every student feels homesick at some point, often a few weeks in, when the excitement fades and the routine sets in. It is not a sign you made the wrong choice.

Build a routine early

Regular sleep, cooking a familiar meal, a gym slot or a weekly walk give your week a shape. Students tell us structure was the single biggest thing that helped.

Stay connected, but not only to home

  • Schedule calls with family instead of being on the phone all day.
  • Join a society, sports club or Indian student association.
  • Say yes to small plans with classmates, even when you feel tired.

When to ask for help

If low mood lasts more than a couple of weeks, or starts affecting sleep, eating or studies, contact your university's student wellbeing or counselling service. It is free, confidential and exists exactly for this.
